Nexon

Blizzard Entertainment reportedly is close to selling all intellectual property rights for the StarCraft franchise to the South Korean company Nexon. According to Chosun Ilbo, negotiations are currently underway, with a deal potentially being finalized soon. This move aligns with Microsoft’s ongoing restructuring efforts and rumors that they are offering various IPs to Hollywood studios. It is worth noting that local media previously reported Nexon was already entrusted with developing new StarCraft games. Fans anticipate official announcements regarding the franchise’s future at BlizzCon 2026, scheduled for September 12–13. From my perspective, this feels like a strategic retreat rather than a creative partnership. Microsoft seems more interested in liquidating assets or securing quick licensing deals with Hollywood than nurturing a beloved gaming legacy. Handing over the entire IP to Nexon suggests Blizzard is ready to let go of a cornerstone title that defined PC gaming for decades. While Nexon has experience in live-service games, the risk of diluting StarCraft’s unique identity is high. If this happens, it marks the end of an era where Blizzard directly controlled its most iconic sci-fi universe. The timing before BlizzCon 2026 hints at a major shift in strategy, likely prioritizing financial restructuring over long-term franchise stewardship.
